In 1965, he controversially\u00a0abandoned his early fan-base\u00a0in the\u00a0American folk music revival, recording a six-minute single, \"Like a Rolling Stone\", which enlarged the scope of popular music.\r\n\r\nDylan's lyrics incorporate a wide range of political, social, philosophical, and literary influences. They defied existing pop-music conventions and appealed to the burgeoning\u00a0counterculture. Initially inspired by the performances of\u00a0Little Richard\u00a0and the songwriting of\u00a0Woody Guthrie,\u00a0Robert Johnson, and\u00a0Hank Williams, Dylan has amplified and personalized\u00a0musical genres. In his recording career, Dylan has explored many of the traditions in American song\u2014from\u00a0folk,\u00a0blues, and\u00a0country\u00a0to\u00a0gospel, and\u00a0rock and roll, and from\u00a0rockabilly\u00a0to\u00a0English,\u00a0Scottish, and\u00a0Irish folk music, embracing even\u00a0jazz\u00a0and the\u00a0Great American Songbook. Dylan performs on guitar, keyboards, and harmonica. Backed by a changing lineup of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has been dubbed \"the\u00a0Never Ending Tour\". His accomplishments as a recording artist and performer have been central to his career, but his songwriting is considered his greatest contribution.\r\n\r\nFollowing\u00a0his self-titled debut album\u00a0in 1962, which mainly consisted of traditional folk songs, Dylan made his breakthrough as a songwriter with the release of the 1963 album\u00a0<i>The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan<\/i>, featuring \"Blowin\u2019 in the Wind\" and the thematically complex composition \"A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall,\" alongside several other enduring songs of the era. Dylan went on to release the politically charged\u00a0<i>The Times They Are a-Changin'<\/i>\u00a0and the more lyrically abstract and introspective\u00a0<i>Another Side of Bob Dylan<\/i>\u00a0in 1964. In 1965 and 1966 Dylan encountered controversy when he adopted the use of\u00a0electrically amplified\u00a0rock\u00a0instrumentation and in the space of 15 months recorded three of the most important and influential rock albums of the 1960s,\u00a0<i>Bringing It All Back Home<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Highway 61 Revisited<\/i>and\u00a0<i>Blonde on Blonde<\/i>.\r\n\r\nIn July 1966, Dylan withdrew from touring after being injured in a motorcycle accident. During this period he recorded\u00a0a large body of songs\u00a0with members of\u00a0the Band, who had previously backed Dylan on tour; these were eventually released as the collaborative album\u00a0<i>The Basement Tapes<\/i>\u00a0in 1975. In the late 1960s and early 70s, Dylan explored country music and rural themes in\u00a0<i>John Wesley Harding<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Nashville Skyline<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>New Morning<\/i>. In 1975 Dylan released his career-defining album\u00a0<i>Blood on the Tracks<\/i>\u00a0followed by the critically and commercially successful\u00a0<i>Desire<\/i>\u00a0the following year. In the late 1970s, Dylan became a\u00a0born-again Christian\u00a0and released a series of albums of contemporary gospel music, notably\u00a0<i>Slow Train Coming<\/i>, before returning to his more familiar rock-based idiom with\u00a0<i>Infidels<\/i>. Dylan's major works during his later career include\u00a0<i>Time Out of Mind<\/i>,\u00a0<i>\"Love and Theft\"<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Tempest<\/i>. His most recent recordings have comprised versions of traditional American standards, especially songs recorded by\u00a0Frank Sinatra.\r\n\r\nSince 1994, Dylan has published seven books of drawings and paintings, and his work has been exhibited in major art galleries. Dylan has sold more than 100\u00a0million records, making him one of the\u00a0best-selling music artists of all time. He has also received\u00a0numerous awards\u00a0including eleven\u00a0Grammy Awards, a\u00a0Golden Globe Award, and an\u00a0Academy Award. Dylan has been inducted into the\u00a0Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,\u00a0Minnesota Music Hall of Fame,\u00a0Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and\u00a0Songwriters Hall of Fame. The\u00a0Pulitzer Prize\u00a0jury in 2008 awarded him a\u00a0special citation\u00a0for \"his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power\".
